Current disease understanding of autoallergy is focused at the presence of autoreactive IgE molecules (auto-IgE) in severe and chronic cases of atopic eczema. However, it is unclear whether auto-IgE is of pathogenic relevance or an epiphenomenon, due to chronic inflammation.
We have shown that:
- autoreactive IgE is present in high titers already in young children with atopic eczema,
- airway specific auto-IgE is present in patients with allergic asthma.
Currently we are assessing the pathophysiologic relevance and impact of auto-IgE as a biomarker for severe forms of allergic diseases and chronic urticaria.
