The degree of 'doctor' is the highest academic degree awarded at Flemish universities, and is recognised and valued worldwide. It is a third cycle degree of Higher Education, after the first (Bachelor) and second (Bachelor and Master) cycles. The degree of doctor is awarded after a research period of usually 4 years, depending on the type of fellowship, and the public defence of an original research thesis. Consequently, the main task of a PhD student consists of research, publishing original scientific papers, attending scientific conferences and presenting own research results in a form of oral presentation or poster exhibition. Moreover, PhD students also support the practical courses in the Bachelor and Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences programs.
