Scientific considerations and ethical constraints have driven a worldwide shift towards human health safety assessment of chemicals without the use of animal testing. This modern ‘Next Generation Risk Assessment’ (NGRA) approach is exposure-led and hypothesis driven, and relies on the integration of non-animal data derived from in silico, in chemico and in vitro methodologies (i.e. New Approach Methodologies or NAMs). This paradigm shift opens new opportunities for computational approaches and artificial intelligence in the field of chemical risk assessment.
